When to Call 911

Know when to seek emergency help immediately.

Call 911 For:

  • • Any life-threatening emergency
  • • Fire or gas leak
  • • Severe bleeding or injury
  • • Choking or difficulty breathing
  • • Signs of a heart attack or stroke
  • • Unconscious person
  • • Suicidal thoughts with plans to act
  • • Domestic violence in progress
  • • Crime in progress

If you're experiencing a crisis, these techniques can help you stay safe while you reach out for professional help.

Try Deep Breathing

  • 1. Breathe in slowly for 4 seconds
  • 2. Hold for 4 seconds
  • 3. Breathe out for 4 seconds
  • 4. Repeat 5-10 times

Use Grounding

  • • 5 things you can see
  • • 4 things you can touch
  • • 3 things you can hear
  • • 2 things you can smell
  • • 1 thing you can taste

Reach Out

  • • Call a trusted friend or family member
  • • Text or call 988
  • • Stay with someone you trust
  • • Remove means of self-harm

Safety Plan

If you're having thoughts of harming yourself, make a safety plan: remove access to weapons or medications, keep crisis hotline numbers visible, identify someone you can call, and promise to wait 24 hours before acting on urges.
